I quit the corporate world in 2010, opting to go solo instead. With that, I threw out all of my suits and ties, and committed myself to just being comfortable, clothing-wise. I decided, even for client meetings, I’d just wear jeans and t-shirts (and sometimes a hoodie if it’s cold), and sneakers. That’s what I’m most comfortable in. The rest is just an act & if clients don’t like it, then they just won’t hire me. (I’m in tech, though, so this sort of quirk is more acceptable than in other industries.) Guess what happened? They still hired me. They really didn’t care at ALL how I was dressed, so long as I could code their project! So, yeah, it’s been great! The only weird thing is that I do sometimes have to actively tell people that I don’t even own a suit. Often, a client will invite me to some event & I tell them, “Thanks, but I should probably sit this out because I actually don’t own a single suit or dress shirt & I wouldn’t want to embarrass anyone.” I’ve made it known in my circle of family and friends that, even if someone dies or gets married… if they invite me or expect me to attend, it’ll be without a suit. I’m simply done with them! To date, no ones cares (thankfully).
