Well, you’re absolutely correct. That’s why Pinata and other pinning services are inferior to the alternatives in my opinion. (One such alternative is Arweave, which has a pay-once-upfront model and is designed for permanent storage with no further payments.) That said, there are still issues around permanence that aren’t even storage related. For example, a dev must protect the private keys and/or seed phrase for the deployer / owner wallet — in perpetuity. Otherwise, if it gets lost and a change to the metadata is needed, it would be impossible to do. So yes, there are many such issues in the NFT space, which is so young that many do not yet realize they even exist. In years to come, we will surely see some disasters related to all of these issues.
